| Bio: | I'm a 36-year-old Taiwanese-American (although I look and act much younger). I was born in Atlanta Georgia, of all places (maybe that's the reason I sometimes use the term "y'all" in my emails), but we quickly moved out of there, so I grew up mostly on the East Coast: Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and upstate New York. In my junior year of high school, we moved to SoCal (gawd, it sucks to be the new kid all the time), and I've called California home ever since, going to Berkeley for an engineering degree (graduating in '93, thus the "93" in fling93) and then coming to the San Jose area to be a software engineer. All that moving around kinda had me retreat into a shell, and I was pretty miserable throughout high school, college, and for several years after that. For example, I didn't really date anybody until my 20s. I also am recently coming to terms with my attachment issues, which resulted in my grabbing and hanging onto my first ever relationship, with Erika. We were married for five years, but separated last November and filed for divorce at the beginning of the year. Thus far, it's been an amicable split, and we hope to remain friends. But she helped me come into my own. So I've realized that I've spent so much of my life not going after what I wanted and now seem to be making up for lost time. One thing I didn't realize I wanted was to be able to change the world. Although being an engineer does have its impact, it doesn't feel like it's my comparative advantage. And from that, you've probably guessed I've now chosen economics. It definitely fits much better with my other love, writing. If you're interested in seeing a sample of what I did before I went back to school (which, along with other upheavals in my life, has put a crimp on my blogging), read my blog, especially the economics posts). I'm thinking of maybe working as a policy analyst at a think tank, so I'm now at San Jose State University to get a Master's in Economics. Why San Jose State? Erika hates when I write that, because it sounds like assume this is an obvious question. But I get it all the time from San Jose State students, so I think it's worth preempting that and answering it. For one, it lets me continue to work as a software engineer part-time, and although I don't enjoy it anymore, the pay beats anything else I'd be able to do part-time. Plus Erika graduated from there and thus could give me good advice on how to navigate the system and all that, which meant a lot, given that it'd been a long time since I'd been at school and have, for most of my life, dreaded change. But I've also learned that their economics department specializes in the Austrian School of economics, which was very heavily influential in the libertarian movement. The Austrian school also has a much more realistic model of human behavior than the standard Neoclassical model. Instead of being grounded on math, it draws more from psychology and sociology, which are fields I'm also interested in. Although I have an issue when they claim there's no such thing as society (uh, why do all of the social sciences exist, then?). In addition to writing, my other love is photography, and if you're interested in checking my stuff out, I'm on Flickr. And while I'm listing that, I might as well also point you to my MySpace profile. I'm also on a bunch of other places, but you should be able to find me using fling93. What else? I'm also happily owned by a kitty cat named Miette (the name is from City of Lost Children) and some freshwater fishies. Oh, and I have blue hair. Anyway, that's enough about me. Who the heck are you? | |
